Macular Degeneration And Filters

  • Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is one of the most common severe vision impairments affecting Australians today. Also known as Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), it is characterised by a loss of central vision.

Based in Fairfield, Dr John Musumeci is an optometrist who can assist in the management of macular degeneration and other macular pathologies using the latest scanning technologies.

While there is no cure, some forms of macular degeneration can be treated in order to slow their progression. With all forms of macular degeneration, there are also steps you can take to better manage the condition.

The two types of macular degeneration are commonly referred to as wet and dry.

For patients with wet AMD, Dr John can assist in diagnosis before referring you to an ophthalmologist for further treatment. Our team can also assist in co-management of these cases, providing supplements and strategies that help you to live with macular degeneration. These supplements and strategies are also available to patients with dry AMD.

For many patients with macular degeneration, glare and light sensitivity may also be a problem. In such cases of macular degeneration, optical filters may be incredibly useful

If appropriate, Dr John may recommend a Colorimetry Assessment and provide you with optical filters helping to reduce glare and light sensitivities and improving visual function.
